Adam Gerhardstein, a husband, father, carpenter, and author has a new book out.
In I Hope I Get Well: A Memoir of Bipolar Disorder, the reader will experience a manic episode—six days without sleep cresting into a state of delusional recklessness so unsettling to others that Adam was lashed down to a hospital bed for 24 hours. And then he survived a year of depression when he lost his sense of self and spent night after night pressed against the railing of his apartment balcony, questioning whether he wanted to live.
The chapters about those first years of Adam’s life with bipolar disorder are interspersed with chapters about his life eighteen years later, when he left a job that he loved because it was too demanding to manage alongside bipolar disorder, and then he went into therapy to find his path forward. To his surprise, however, Adam’s therapist turned his attention to his past, and he learned how to remember those traumatic early years with his illness with kindness instead of fear. And he learned how to live with bipolar disorder more authentically.

This will be a transformational book for people living with bipolar disorder, the people who love them, and professionals in the mental health field.
